MY KINGDOM!: the HINES WARD of Blogs

MONDAY HANGOVER: "There's beauty in the breakdown."

Welcome back to the Kingdom, I know you’ve missed me, and I’ve missed you.

If you’re out there, and I’ve not talked to you in a week or two, feel free to get back into the game and say hello.

Well, there’s not a whole ton to report from the weekend that was, although a party back in Herminie on Saturday, in preparation for this weekend’s Jon/Jackie nuptials was a rambunctiously good time. Before I knew it, it was 3am, I was hammered, and I had to make the long-walk back home (ie: across the street to my parents). I think it’s safe to say that good times were had by all. It was good to, you know, actually hang out with Jon, Jackie, Wilbur, Jason, and Michelle for once, so props to them all!

Bonus props go to my beruit partner, ?Bob? He’s the only white guy with a cutoff shirt and army tattoos that I’ve ever seen do “The Robot.” And it was f*ckin’ amazing, at that!

Moving right along, let’s talk about the Stillers. Sure, it’s a lit-tle early to get too excited about the Roethlisberger Era, but early returns are good. It’s nice to see the defense bending, but not breaking. It’s always tough to judge the team based on a Cincinnati or Cleveland game, because the rivalries are so big, the games are always close and both teams bring the ruckus. That, combined with the facts that Oakland was the first week, we didn’t show up for The Game That Never Happened, and Miami was played in torrentialness, there’s no real way to figure out of the Steelers are, you know… good or not yet. All I know is they already have half as many wins as they did last year. So it’s a start.

I’d also like to give props to the San Diego SuperChargers and the Arizona Cardinals for coming up HUGE for me this week, and helping me stay a game ahead of Sprout in the Outback Challenge. That, is.. one game ahead until I lose tonight. I can’t BELIEVE I picked the Chiefs… What am I gonna do with a bucket as a hand..? What was I thinking

Baseball playoffs start tomorrow! LET’S GO CARDS! DIE REDSOX DIE!!!
This is going to be a FUN post-season, for there isn’t a single dominant team in either league. I wouldn’t be surprised with ANY of these teams making the World Series.

Can we all PLEASE take a moment to enjoy the fact that NEITHER the Giants NOR the Cubs made the playoffs this year? I TOLD everyone the Cubs Offense was inconsistent, and their pitching injury-prone, but no one would listen. Well, there!

No Bonds? No Sosa? NO WAY! BEST PLAYOFFS EVER! Now, Lord, please eliminate the Red Sox through some sort of zany/heartbreaking machination... and don't let the Braves win, either. Thanks! I'll even go to church!

Nowt, just for fun and posterity, I’ve got to make a few predictions:

-Anaheim beats the Red Sox in five.
probably the best-matched of all the Divisional Series, this one can go either way. Anaheim’s a HOT team that plays small ball, and I hate the Red Sox, which is more than enough for me to pick them. Also, Vlad Guerrero, who SHOULD be the ALMVP, is on an absolute TEAR.

-Yankees beat Twins in four.
This is the toughest one for me to pick. I REALLY like the idea of throwing Santana twice in a short series, but it hurts that the Twins only get two games in the Hefty-Dome. They also ALWAYS seem to freak when they play the Yanks. And it’s nearly impossible to pick against Joe Torre in October. My brain tells me Twins, my gut is screaming “JETER!!!”

-Cardinals beat Dodgers in four.

St. Louis has lost its best pitcher, and has been flat for weeks. Rolen is banged up, so I’m scared. The Dodgers are hot off of an emotional flurry to win the West. I think that the Lou’s defense and hitting wins out, though.

-Houston beats Atlanta in three.

BIG PREDICTION TIME. I mean, Houston has to win a postseason series SOMETIME, don’t they? They’re hot and playing tough, mean baseball right now. They’re led by a manager who’s nickname is “Scrap Iron.” This is the last run for 4/5 of this team. I think Houston and St. Louis in the NLCS makes a TON of sense. And I don’t know who I’d pick to win.

Don’t let people sucker you, though. Clemens twice in a series is NOT that much of an advantage anymore. See last season. Luckily, Houston’s rotation is mad-stronger than just him. A Houston/St. Louis NLCS would be LOADS of fun, with runs scored all over the place.

God, I love baseball.

For the record:
I’ll be rooting for the Cards in the NL.
I’ll be rooting for anyone but the Red Sox in the AL. (In actuality, the three AL teams I root for regularly (ie: 1 east, 1 central, 1 west) are the Yankees, the Twins, and the Angels. This is the most interested I am in the baseball playoffs in a long time, because only the Braves and Sox are teams I undeniably hate, and only the Dodgers are a team I’m indifferent to. Which means the Sox will play the Braves in the World Series That Never Happened.

Okay, whaddya think?

  • ok even if the Steelers win for awhile, everyone knows Philly will win it all, so it doesn't really matter. And how can you like the Cards when they stole Rolen from the Phils? (ok maybe it didn't exactly happen that way, but still...) at least they got rid of that JD Drew jerk. all Pittsburgh can boast is a nice baseball stadium! :Þ j/k.
ok all this sports talk has worn me out. c'mon adam get back to the juicy stuff! hehehe

  • Why does everyone hate all over the Cubs. You know how long it's been since we won a world series?! And then you had to go and pick the CARDS?! I'm crushed- people should not root for the Cards. Unfortunately, you're right about the pitching staff- I had such high hopes for Prior this year, and then he let me down. Farnsworth still has great legs, though, so we can breathe a sigh of relief there. of course, if I had my dream, the cubs would play the tigers in the world series, but while I'm at it I might as well ask for an end to world hunger.
And who's that nut-job who thinks all other sports end when football begins? of course, the bastards over in the NHL have totally ruined my winter already. Go Chicago Wolves! Chelios better not defect back to the Blackhawks though... the Red Wings have taken too many hits so far, and nobody likes a traitor (Federov).
