Ned? Ned Ryerson????
This is a really cool list of the Top 100 Movie Screenplays of all time. Unfortunately, I don't have enough time to write about it. Three quick points, though, then you can CLICK ME, check out the list, and post your comments (yeah right).
1) I don't know what's a bigger shock: Eternal Sunshine actually making the top 25, or Groundhog Day at 27. Not that I don't absolutely agree with both.
2) The Princess Bride at 84. Cool.
3) No Death to Smoochy? for SHAME.
What's your favorite movie that didn't make it?

Marc, I think that you need to keep in mind that this isn't about the movie per se, but instead, the movie's screenplay. Hence, I can see why some of those really great movies are a little lower. Braveheart, I would argue, is more specticle than literary masterpiece, though it is a phenomenal movie. Lauren, your arguments re: Shawshank and It's a Wonderful Life are spot on. The list (as most of these "Great Lists" are) is terribly inconsistent. It's as though the listmakers felt there were certain movies that just HAD to be there, and were forced onto the list. I'll be the first to contend that Star Wars should be nowhere to be found. It's mostly sampled from Kurwisowa's The Hidden Castle. I'd argue that Empire should be the SW of choice for this list.
And I'm damn serious about Death to Smoochy. I think comedies, in general, were incredibly under-represetned by the list. I can't possibly believe that it's easier to write an incredible comedy than an incredible drama. Hence- the choice of Groundhog Day for the top 30 is pure Genius.
