THE MONDAY HANGOVER: 7/26/04
Guess who’s back? Back again? Knipper’s back, tell a friend…
Hi friends, welcome back to the Kingdom. Did you miss me? I didn’t think so, thanks to the lack of questions and queries in my inbox. I’m a little disappointed the Irrelevant Mailbag idea has not caught on, because I think it could have made things a little more interactive, and a little more fun. This blog exists for TWO reasons: 1) so I can write. 2) so yinz can have fun, n’at. I just wanted to create a place where we can talk about random stuff and take some shots at each other. Sort of like a cyber-lunchtable. If I’ve said it once, friends, I’ve said it a thousand times, “It’s takes a village to build a blog.” So get those comments rolling! I know you’re out there!
Anyway(s), this was a GRAND weekend. For starters, it saw the return of the Lumber Company to Pittsburgh’s North Shore! Not only did the Buccos sweep the Redlegs, but they’re quickly approaching .500, and respectability. It’s fun being a Pirates fan for the first time in a long time. Sure, they’re not going to win EVERY game, but now when you head to the Most Beautiful Ballpark in the Known Universe, you’ve got a great shot at seeing real-life Major League Baseball for the first time in about 10 years.
Before I go off TOO much on the Bucs, I want to quickly recommend that NO ONE EVER MISS a “Skyblast.” Simply put, it’s an amazing experience. After a Pirates game, they set off about a half hour or so’s worth of fireworks from: barges on the river, platforms in the stadium, the Roberto Clemente Bridge, and THE TOP OF THE USX BUILDING (ie: the “Tallest Building between NYC and Chicago). In between volleys of pyrotechnics, there are skits and light shows and random insanity. If there’s one thing you ever take from this blog, let it be this: NEVER MISS SKYBLAST. Rant over.
Party at Sprout’s was as fun as can be expected. Special Kingdom shout-out to Elise’s stripper shoes—the highlight of my week.
Also, thanks to Gavin for sweet-ass Bucco seats as I watched them win twice in one weekend. Special notice of awesomeness to my boy, Rob Mackowiak (THE MACK OF ALL TRADES) for coming up with a PH game-winning double as a gift to his fan club (Gav and I) in attendance.
And FINALLY, Kudos to George Lucas for not screwing up and officially naming Episode III: REVENGE OF THE SITH. The PERFECT title, especially for Star Wars geeks that know the story behind why “Return of the Jedi” got its name. If you don’t know—all you gotta do is MAIL THE IRRELEVANT MAILBAG!! (see how I draw everything together in one nice, little bow?)
Okee Dokee, that should suffice for now, I suppose.
Tune in for next time when we find out the answer to “is Adam going to Raw tonight? Or not?”
Go Pubbers! (1-1 against South Hills: Game 3 tonight)
-much love,

Kujo, the Sox better start worrying more about the A's than the Yankees, or they might not be playing in October.
As for Witness, I've never seen it, apparently I should. I think it was on Encore the other night, too.. I'm going to have to keep my eyes open for that. I need to see 'The Mosquito Coast,' too, as that's supposed to be special. Not to mention, 'American Graffiti' and 'Blade Runner,' which have both been brought to my attention. See how much fun it is when i give a random opinion, and we all get to discuss? This is why you should Mail the Blog.

Kujo, aren't you a Mets fan? Didn't anyone ever tell you it's wrong to change primary fandoms? And don't give me any crap about the Cardinals, either, our situations are different, as I'll explain:
Kujo:
Mets v. Red Sox, '86 World Series. It should be a cardinal sin for you to root for any team that you've played in a Championship game against. That's like a Stillers fan suddenly becoming a Cowboys fan.
Mets in 2000: Played in the World Series
Mets in 2004: in the thick of the Wild Card and NL East race.
Mets in general: Competitive or better for the last twenty years.
Adam:
Pirates v. Cardinals (in the same division) I'm willing to give you this one. They play 15-20 really meaningful games a year. I stringently root for the Bucs every time. And it's not like a Stillers fan rooting for the Brows, though they're in the same division, because those two div. rivals are actually rivals.
Pirates in general: Have sucked balls for the last 12+ years. I root only for the Cardinals in the postseason.
"Adam wers a Cardinals hat" Okay, well, it matches my clothes better, is a great hat, and Jim Edmonds (until recently) was my favourite player from the time Andy Van Slyke left the Pirates. He was my outfield idol. Which is why I used to wear an Angels hat.
Notice, I NEVER refer to the Cards as "we" and I never get in heated arguments with Cubs fans about them. I have in no way adopted them as my primary team. I root for them to win, so long as it's not hurting the Bucs.
My point is this, Kujo. You're everything that's wrong with the "Red Sox Nation" (the most annoying term in sports since the Braves annointed themselves "America's Team").
1) you think everyone not a Red Sox fan is a Yankees fan. Not true. I like the Yankees, but I like the Twins in the AL more. I root for the Yanks to beat the Sox, but only to give Bromberg fits.
2) You used to be a true blue Mets fan (didn't you have a hat?) but once you had to hate the Yanks and moved to Boston, you turned your back on your real team and jumped on the "Cowboy Up" bandwagon.
3)You believe that you're team is all powerful now, but have already resigned yourself to the fact that you'll lose in October. So what? you'll win the div. and then lose to the wild card Yanks? If that's what you think, don't waste my time pretending the divison race means anything.
4) You convinetly forget that the 2d highest payroll in the bigs resides comfortably in Beantown. The Sox aren't a band of loveable losers like the Cubs. They're a band of underachievers and chokers, like the Braves.
It's NEVER good to be like the Braves. Pennants be damned.
Buddy, this is in jest, and you know I love you, but stop telling us how the BoSox are going to catch the Yanks, when there are plenty other teams you have to worry about right now (A's, Twins, Palehose).
In the meantime, I'm going to go root for my own band of "real" loveable losers, the Buccos... at least until October, when it's St. Louie bandwagon time!
yours,

Touche'!?!? ..almost, but not quite.
I was unware of your loyalty to the Bruins and mid-'80s Sox, so that does give signifcance to your love of them. Congratulations, you are hereby a legitimate Red Sox fan in my book, and I stand firmly corrected.
HOWEVER. I root for the Bucs (and there's no 'K'-- that team plays basketball in Milwaukee. Think "Buccaneers.." got it? good) 100% of the time from April 1 to October 1 (or further, should they actually ever play in Oct.) It's true, I do root for the Cards if they're playing, say, the Phillies or any other non-Pittsburgh team. But that's no different, really, than if I were to root for the Rangers to beat the Devil Rays, cuz I hate that bastard Lou Pinella, or something.
First and foremost, I'm a Jim Edmonds fan. Like you with your Clemens poster, I kept Edmonds baseball cards in my locker at Dson right beside Andy Van.
I also have a fondness for Rolen, Pujols, Morris, et al.. and actually REALLY loved Darryl Kile and Mark McGwire from back in my roto days.
The Cards just become "my team" when there's no one else to root for come football season. Especially since there aren't teams (other than the Red Sox) who I despise more than say, Atlanta (for ruining my childhood), San Fran (for Bonds and their stupid fans), Chicago (because my bud Bill always loved the Cubbies) or the Mets (an '80s holdover).
So while I'm willing to admit I was wrong about you and the Sox, I'm holding fast to the fact that you're wrong about me and the Cards. For better or for worse, I bleed Black and Gold. (Or Blue and White, on autumn Saturdays).
Asst. PM Jewkowski, I salute you!
-go Yankees-
